Heritance...
...promotes open museum practices that foster diversity and good governance. More about us.
Museums matter.
They protect a public trust, the world's heritage.
They support community development; offer lifelong opportunities for learning; and bring the only exposure some children will have to art, culture and the wider world of possibilities.
Furthermore, they can promote tolerance and historical perspective and serve as a place where a variety of people can reconstruct their shared past.
But most museums need assistance in fulfilling their missions:
- 90% are limited in their ability to protect, preserve and present their collections;
- 80% do not have paid staff dedicated to collections;
- 71% need additional staff training and expertise;
- 77% do not allocate funds for preservation. *
Heritance meets a critical need by bringing financial and technical support to the stewards of our cultural heritage.
"Whilst damage from war and natural disasters gain international headlines, the enclosed report shows that just as great risks are more insidious and incremental. These dangers result from a lack of knowledge about what heritage there is, a lack of awareness of its value to our society...."
- Michael Petzet, in his introduction to the "Heritage at Risk Report" to ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites)
