O V E R V I E W

The population of about 1200 ‡Khomani San are a deprived and largely damaged collection of disparate people representing what has been termed ‘the reverse of the San diaspora’. The South African San Institute (SASI) programme aims at reconstructing the lives of the ‡Khomani San community and awakening a coherent sense of identity and community in the southern Kalahari through the creation of sustainable livelihood initiatives. Despite difficult living conditions and social conditions for the San people, including on the farms in the Kalahari transferred to the San in 1999, their pride in their cultural identity, their language and their ancient traditions is growing and giving them new-found confidence, optimism and a belief in the future.

Heritance is working with SASI to build cultural centers that will assist the San people in protecting their heritage, transmitting it to their young people and promoting the human, civil and cultural rights of the San people throughout southern Africa.

A C T I O N S

In January 2008, Heritance facilitated a week of meetings with SASI, Provincial Museums, Upington Museum, and Municipality and representatives of the San people.

O U T C O M E S

Heritance made a contribution by:

  1. Bringing together disparate peoples and organizations to find solutions to the San people’s goal to create cultural centers
  2. Leading a group presentation to the municipal and provincial governments to garner support for the project
  3. Creating a strategic plan for following up on the meetings
  4. Formulating plans for a provisional museum, "the Bush bus", a mobile museum that will bring cultural heritage exhibits to the San people living on the Kalahari Farms
  5. Implementing a decision-making process and communications system for managing the project off-site.
